In the article, she talks about how investors should be skeptical of high-dividend-yield stocks. In the article, Craig defines a high-yield stock as anything with a yield of more than 4%, and is says that such stocks necessitate a “look beneath the surface.” The article says that one problem with investing in high-dividend stocks is that an investor’s portfolio can become too concentrated in volatile industries. For example, steep valuation drops in the energy sector hurt some investors. Craig says there’s an open question about the sustainability of dividend payments from retail companies due to the rise of online shopping.
